WHAT YOU CAN DO
Support organizations that
work for improvements in human rights and economic justice in
the Third World -- Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch,
Oxfam America, Global Exchange, School of the Americas Watch,
50 years is Enough, and others
Help organizations that provide
aid to those in the Third World resisting repression by dictatorships
and authoritarian governments -- Free Burma, Coalition for Corporate
Withdrawal from Burma, International Campaign for Tibet, East
Timor Action Network, and others
Call, fax or write the President,
and your Senators and Representative and tell them that the US
should help fight for human rights in -- Burma, Guatemala, East
Timor / Indonesia, Tibet / China, Mozambique, and other countries
with abysmal human rights records
Contact the President, and
your Senators and Representative, and ask them why, from World
War II to the present time, the United States has consistantly
supported right-wing anti-democratic governments against popular
reformist governments -- in Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala,
Brazil, Haiti, Panama, Cuba, Costa Rica, Granada, Dominican Republic,
Jamaica, Chile, Morocco, Egypt, Iran, Mozambique, Angola, Congo,
South Africa, Indonesia, Philippines
Let the President and your
Senators or Representative know that you don't want your foreign
aid tax dollars going to support authoritarian governments or
Third World elites; tell them that the sale of weapons to repressive
right-wing military governments is not acceptable to you; let
them know that the U.S. spends too much money on the military
and on weapons
Contact the network and cable
TV news programs, you watch, including PBS, and the newspapers
and news magazines you read, to complain about their inadequate
or misleading coverage of harmful US government and corporate
policies in the Third World
Complain to transnational
corporations -- Shell, Unocal, Amoco, PepsiCo, Nestle, Nike, Disney,
and others -- whose policies harm the economies, environments,
and people of the Third World; threaten to boycott their products
Tune in to listener-sponsored
Pacifica Radio to learn how the United States government and the
governments of other western democracies support repression and
prevent democracy in the Third World
Read progressive magazines
-- Covert Action Quarterly, the Progressive, the Nation, In These
Times, Mother Jones, Dissent, Toward Freedom, Z magazine, New
Internationalist, Dollars and Sense -- to learn the truth about
how United States policies and the actions of transnational corporations
and international financial institutions exploit Third World resources
and labor and prevent Third World peoples from attaining economic
justice and enjoying human rights
Tell your travel
agent that you are concerned about human rights abuses in the
Third World and you want more information about the human rights
situation in the countries you are planning to visit
Call or write the tourist board,
Embassy or Consulate of the country you plan to visit and complain
about human rights abuses in their country
Become a Freedom Writer for
Amnesty International and write letters in behalf of Third World
prisoners of conscience
