Arms-Trade Activists
MoJo Wire / Mother Jones, August 1999
The following groups work on various aspects of the national
and global weapons business and related arms-transfer issues,
including human rights. The groups vary widely in focus, size,
and intensity -- some concentrate on a specific region or weapons-program,
while others work for social justice and peace worldwide.
You can also get involved by contacting your elected representatives
about the Code of Conduct Arms Transfer Act. The act, sponsored
by Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.), requires the President to identify
those countries that are either undemocratic, abusers of human
rights, involved in acts of armed aggression, or are not members
of the U.N. register on conventional arms. Congress then has the
option of barring weapons transfers to those countries.
